January 14, 2015 Dear Mr. Hefler, Thank you for taking the time write me regarding the June 2012 letter sent to the Inspector General of the U.S. Department of State questioning any direct or indirect influence the Muslim Brotherhood has had within our federal government. I appreciate hearing your views on this issue and welcome the opportunity to respond. The purpose of the letter was to illuminate and address whether or not the Muslim Brotherhood - Egypts oldest and largest Islamist organization and one that is considered by many to be a terrorist organization - had tried or is in the process of trying to infiltrate the federal government. I truly regret that a U.S. State Department aide, Mrs. Huma Abedin, became the focus of the letter in the media because the intention of the letter was to bring greater attention to a legitimate national security risk. The Muslim Brotherhoods stated mission in North America is eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and sabotaging its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and Gods religion is made victorious over all other religions. There is substantial evidence that the Muslim Brotherhood remains committed to infiltrating our government in the hopes of destroying us from within. This organization represents a legitimate and serious national security concern for the United States, and as a Member of Congress I have sworn an oath to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies, both foreign and domestic. As such, I felt compelled to request a full investigation by five U.S. Inspectors General (Defense, Homeland Security, Office of the Director of National Intelligence, Justice and State) into the Muslim Brotherhoods activities in the U.S. and whether or not the organization had succeeded in breaching our government. As a member of the House Intelligence Committee, my top priority is ensuring the security of our nation. The tragic events at Fort Hood in 2009 proved that our enemies will go to great lengths, including infiltrating and recruiting members of our military, to commit acts of terror against American citizens.
