January 16 1911 Cardinal great, Jerome Hannah Dizzy Dean was born in Lucas, Arkansas. He made his debut on the last day of the 1930 season, threw a three-hitter, and promptly demanded a raise. He was sent back to the minors. Brought up for good in 1932, Dean would win 121 games over the next five seasons. Albert, his father and grandmother immigrated to the United States in 1996. The Cardinals drafted him with the 402nd overall pick in the 1999 draft. In 11 seasons with the Redbirds, Albert would win NL MVP awards and two World Series Rings. He signed with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2012. 1991 Operation Desert Storm began at 6 p.m. St. Louis time (3 a.m. Jan. 17 in Iraq) with massive air and missile attacks on targets in Iraq and Kuwait. St. Louis radio and television stations suspended regular programming. Nine Missouri National Guard units, seven from the Army and two from the Air Guard were called up. The Defense Mapping Agency in St. Louis was also critical to the operation. 1991 Ike and Tina Turner were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Kurt Warner threw five touchdown passes and Tony Horne returned the second half opening kickoff for a touchdown, as the Rams beat the Vikings, 49-37. 2001 Days after TWA announced a buyout by American Airlines, the city lost the headquarters of another major hometown firm. Ralston-Purina announced that Nestle would purchase the worlds largest manufacturer of dry pet food. Ralston Chairman William Stiritz said more jobs could eventually move to St. Louis because of the deal.
