January 21, 1938: WOLFMAN JACK, one of the greatest and most recognizable DJs in radio history is born Bob Smith in Brooklyn. His WOLFMAN persona was perfected while working at Mexican border radio station XERF, whos powerful signal could be heard in almost all 48 states. Soon he was managing a station in MN and sending show tapes to XERF. By 1966, he was set up in LA and doing a live show that aired over XERB, another border radio giant. He gained even more fame in 1973 when George Lucas put him in American Grafriti. During the 70s, the WOLFMAN was also heard on WABC in NYC and over Armed Forces Radio and he was the sometimes host of the late-night music TV program, The Midnight Special. He became an iconic figure in American popular culture. We lost the WOLFMAN on July 1, 1995 at the age of 57.
