January 23, 2015 Lafayette Consolidated Government releases details of several PlanLafayette Week events, posts online calendar Lafayette Consolidated Government released the calendar of PlanLafayette Week events today on its website. Earlier this month, Lafayette Consolidated Government announced that it would reprise PlanLafayette Week this February as an effort to continue the momentum of implementing the plan that was adopted last summer. The week of workshops and other events will kick off with a resolution before the City-Parish Council on February 3 and will conclude on February 11 with the annual State of the Parish Address. Events focus in on various accomplishments since the plan’s adoption, as well as action items on the horizon. Several partner organizations are bringing in national planning experts to discuss various specific recommendations in the plan. In total, there are more than 10 workshops, media events, public meetings, and other activities. Some of the highlights of the week include a lecture presented by the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce by transportation engineer Peter Swift at the Acadiana Center for the Arts. Swift will discuss how to overcome barriers that prevent communities from building streets that work for all users (often known as complete streets), not just those driving. His presentation details some of the faulty assumptions that can guide transportation investments, and how communities can identify tools to move forward on one of PlanLafayette’s major action items, providing mixed-use centers. “We are thrilled to take part in PlanLafayette Week, and it provides an excellent opportunity for our members as well. As we launch One Acadiana, one of our three key strategies is to “revitalize the core” to make our area even more attractive to businesses and individuals seeking a high-quality urban environment. Bringing in Peter Swift as part of this exciting week of activities will help inform our planning and progress as we launch this bold, new initiative,” said Jason El Koubi, President and CEO of the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce. Project Front Yard will host Tom Ethans, the director of Take Pride Winnipeg!, for a breakfast and beautification summit sponsored by Lafayette Convention and Visitors Commission. Attendees can register for only the breakfast or for the entire morning event. “We have all been energized by the optimism and early successes of Project Front Yard so far. This summit gives us two things we need at this stage-- lessons from a successful model in another community and the opportunity to discuss next steps. LCVC is committed to this effort long-term because we believe that it can ultimately make Lafayette an even more desirable community to visit,” said Ben Berthelot, President and CEO of LCVC. Several events are open to the public at no charge. Some require pre-registration or have fees associated with meals to be provided. Those events that require registration have links from the full calendar which can be found on the LCG website (lafayettela.gov/ComprehensivePlan/Pages/PlanLafayette-Week.aspx). The calendar will continue to be updated as more event details are confirmed.Contact: Carlee Alm-LaBar (337)291-8307
