January 25, 1967: MILESTONE -- Penny Lane singled out Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields Forever were recorded during the same sessions as SGT PEPPERS LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND and intended for release on that album. However, Capitol records was getting antsy for new Beatles material since it hadnt been since August when the Beatles released REVOLVER. On this date, Penny Lane was remixed for single release. The original mix was sent out prematurely to some radio stations including WPGC-FM in Washington, DC, the station on which I first heard this song. Heres a stereo recording of that mix. Youll note a little extra trumpet at the end. I got accustomed to the original version and have forever missed the little trumpet riff missing on MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR and subsequent compilations. https://youtube/watch?v=2jFmDpx98j4
