January 29, 2014 Dont Trust the NSAs New Privacy Officer Dear Laissez Faire Today Reader, The NSA hasnt really been gung-ho about opening up its operations to the public. They prefer to stay behind as many closed doors as possible. Its a safe bet that privacy isnt a very popular word around their offices. But late last year, they actually took a step to address the problems brought to light by whistle-blower Edward Snowden. They put up a job posting looking for their next NSA Privacy Officer. This person would be the primary advisor to the NSAs director on civil liberties and privacy protection. Thats just like the government. They create new jobs to address and fix a problem, rather than getting rid of the whole illegal operation in the first place. If youre a fan of limited government like us, this sounds amazing. Finally, someone to keep an eye on the NSAs operations. A person on the inside who looks out for the rights and privacy of ordinary Americans just like you. Maybe things are beginning to turn around in the Potomac swamp... Unfortunately, theres a catch. You see, the NSA didnt go far looking for someone to fill this role. They probably didnt even bother looking for someone outside the system. They needed to hire someone that was a team player and was completely on board with big government and encroaching on Americans rights. So if you thought theyd turn to an impartial outside the D.C. beltway guardian of civil rights... too bad. Instead they turned to the other government agency thats almost as popular as the NSA, the Department of Homeland Security. They tapped Rebecca Becky Richards as the agencys first Privacy Officer. Richards has plenty of experience since her previous position was with the DHSs privacy office. Seriously, this is what passes as reform in D.C. nowadays. Defenders of these surveillance programs will point to this as the government taking necessary steps to make sure your rights are preserved. But theres a simple way to protect those rights and save you billions in the process. Scrap the whole thing. Its not like its working anyway. Speaking of government spending, did you know that were on the cusp of another debt ceiling showdown? If youre not, its alright. Its not like the media will bother covering it, what with all the other problems and scandals floating about. Well go into further detail in todays article by Forbes contributor Jeffrey Dorfman. Before you get anxious about another government shutdown or default, dont worry. As Jeffrey will show, the hoopla that usually accompanies this showdown is nothing compared to the reality of the situation.
