January Transfer Trading That Could Push Newcastle Top - TopicsExpress

January Transfer Trading That Could Push Newcastle Top Six! Some weeks ago I wrote in defence of Alan Pardew, suggesting the lack of support from the club in the transfer market had been a major factor for the poor performance last season. Having watched Newcastle this season it is clear that the lack of transfer activity in the close season has been highlighted by the lack of defensive cover and a top class number 9. Sacrifice? Despite that I genuinely feel our performances have deserved better results; the second half at Everton, Liverpool before the sending off, even the Mackems game which was ours for the taking. With a bit of luck we could be sitting firmly up the table with another 4 or 5 points and Pardew would be, if not actually our hero, at least treated with a bit more respect. Neither is it his fault that Papiss Cisse can’t hit a barn door with a banjo at the moment. This brings me to the main point. In my opinion we need 4 quality players to add to the squad in January and I believe that could give us a real chance of challenging for a top 6 position. We need a centre half, centre forward, midfield playmaker ( or 2 if Cabaye leaves) and a winger. The problem of course is how do we finance these because it’s clear Mr Ashley won’t sanction spending the sort of cash needed for 4 top players. Here’s my solution: we sell Marveaux, Obertan (a no brainer), Steven Taylor, Cisse and Santon. I don’t feel that the first 2 will make an impact at Newcastle, Taylor should be sacrificed for someone a class better, and Cisse looks like a beaten man and needs a fresh challenge. I guess the most controversial would be Santon who is a good young player but suspect defensively and we have a great replacement in Haidara, with Dummett and Ferguson waiting in the wings. Santon would also command a big fee and I think those 5 could raise in the region of 15 to 20 £million. If Ashley could be persuaded to stump up a few more millions we could end up with a squad capable of bringing some real success to the club and Alan Pardew can be judged on that basis. Needless to say this is probably the stuff of dreams rather than reality but wouldn’t it be nice.
