January is Poverty Awareness Month According to the National Womens Law Center, women in all racial and ethnic groups experienced higher poverty rates than white, non-Hispanic men. Poverty rates were particularly high, at about one in four, among black (25.1 percent) and Hispanic (24.8 percent) women, and about one in three among Native American (34.4 percent) women. Rates for foreign-born women (20.0 percent), white, non-Hispanic women (10.3 percent), and Asian women (11.5 percent) were also considerably higher than the rate for white, non-Hispanic men (7.7 percent).
