Japan Earthquake, Tsunami, Nuclear Radiation… and a Chinese Herb called Ganoderma Posted in Chinese Herbal Medicine by Dr. Quentin Chen on March 18, 2011 The nuclear crisis came amid the devastation wrought by the 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami which the Japanese government says has claimed more than 10,000 lives. The Prime Minister of Japan, Naoto Kan, said radioactivity around the stricken nuclear plant at Fukushima, 250 kilometers north of Tokyo, had ”risen considerably” and reached harmful levels. In a nationally televised statement, Prime Minister warned there are dangers of more leaks and told people living within 19 miles (30 kilometers) of the Dai-ichi complex to stay indoors to avoid potential health risks from the radiation. Due to the disaster, radiation becomes a focus of people’s concern. Actually, radiation is everywhere in modern world. Today, people have increasingly relied on mobile phones, computers, micro-wave ovens, televisions and etc, which emit radiation and damage people’s health. Take mobile phone radiation as example, when being used, mobile phones transmit radio waves to the radiation base station. The human body will more or less absorb any kind of radio waves and hence bring about changes in human body, which is likely to affect people’s health. There are many ways to protect yourself from daily radiation. A simple measure is to place several potted cactus beside your computer as they can effectively absorb the radiation released by the computer. For those who have a tight schedule or have to rush for work, the simplest way to curb radiation is by simply drinking 2 to 3 cups of green tea and eating an orange. As green tea can be assimilated by the body easily into a form of vitamin A, which is later synthesized into a substance called rhodopsin, it helps reducing radiation. Also, rhodopsin helps keeping our eyes see things clearly in the dark by improving the visual ability, and at the same time protects us from the hazard of the computer radiation. Besides green tea, chrysanthemum tea, spirulina, and Sea buckthorn oil also play a role of anti-radiation. Take some foods which are rich in vitamin A and C such as carrots, cherries, apples, bean sprouts, tomatoes as a good measure to reduce the harmful effect of an indoor radiation. Traditional Chinese medicines are also very helpful in the fight against radiation. Ganoderma lucidum functions very well in this field. It is actually a medicinal mushroom commonly used in Asia as a treatment of cancer, in combination with other modern techniques of treatment. Ganoderma belongs to the Polyporaceae group of the fungi family. They are more potent than Ginseng in radio-protectivity. It is often referred to as the ‘King of Herbs’. It is non addictive and non toxic, and as a nutritional supplement, it’s suitable for all ages. Many studies have been conducted on its function of anti-radiation. Feed the test rats Ganoderma Oral Liquid by 2.5,5.0,15.0 ml/kg b.wt./d for 30 days, then put them under a whole body gamma beam illumination to obtain the data of the quantity changes of peripheral white blood cells, bone marrow cell micro nuclear rates, hemolysin of the test rats. The researchers observed increased ability of the peripheral white blood cells, reduced bone marrow cell micro nuclear rates and enhanced hemolysin of the test rats after gamma beam illumination in the test rats fed Ganoderma Oral Liquid. Therefore, it was evidence that Ganoderma do have the function of assisting irradiation hazard protection. Ganoderma is already well known and commonly used in Japan, so I am certain that with this Nuclear scare, the demand for Ganoderm in Japan will increase, as people try to do everything they can to protect themselves from radiation. Other than having radio-protective property, Ganoderma has a wide range of benefits which we can go into more detail in our future posts. For now, I express my condolence to the victim of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami on my warm wishes to the people of Japan.
