Jason Spencer posted this article in my GWYW Group (https://facebook/groups/Mark.Ferrell.GWYW/) and I thought Id share it on my wall, with my response: This doesnt surprise me in the least. What you need to understand is that this is not an isolated incident, nor is it uncommon. It happens every day, everywhere. It is NOT a function of the buyers wealth or budget. Oprah and her staff arent the only ones who will try to get you to work for free. Brides will. Community groups will. Charities will. Corporations will. DJ show producers will. DJ groups/associations will. Your friends will. Your family will. They will all try to get you to work for free. And they will all have reasons for it. The bottom line is this: You dont have to work for free. EVER. You dont have to discount. EVER. All of these groups have the money you require to do the good work you do. Your extremely reasonable fee is a very small percentage of any one of these events or productions. You must decide your worth. You must ask for it. You must defend it. The ONLY reason you might have a problem with it, and be tempted to work for free/discount is because SO MANY OTHERS in this industry are willing to WORK FOR FREE or for a discount - then subsidize their income in some other way. Which is what hula-hoop lady ran into. Oprah Winfrey got plenty of people who were willing to work for free. It doesnt feel good to be coerced to work for free. Frankly, its an insult. Think of that the next time YOU try to get someone to work for free. It sounds like this: I can get it [somewhere else] for less. Its only for a few hours. Its for a good cause. We dont have that much in our budget for [service]. Can you give me a better price? Think of the exposure. Give worth, Get worth.
