Jedforest 2nds 18 – 17 Kelso 2nds If memory serves its been a number of years since the 2nds travelled to Kelso and left with a victory. With the teams tails up from the dogfight victory over Haddington, and Kelso having posted wins over Edin Accies Blues and RHC 2nds, the match was all set for nothing less than a border battle. In the 1st half, Jed established dominance in the scrum early on with Arran Storrie putting in an excellent shift at loose head against his much larger opponent. With the introduction of Finlay Robb at hooker it was great to have a proper lineout on the go. With some great, if not a little overzealous and frantic attack, The 2s got their first try from Robb but Kelso soon replied however and with some good attacking play eventually found its way through our robust defence keeping the game on the level. Jed came back and eventually found itself on the 5m line with a scrum and with a mighty heave, pushed back the kelso scrum far enough for Jamie Hynd to cross the line and post our second try. The game rolled on and kelso were finding life a little difficult in the lineouts due to Serial squealer Nicky Bates sacking them until a scrum dropped on his neck and forced him to go off for a bit. The 2nd half saw members of the Auld Guard return to the pitch, most notably was Ali Campbell improving on his 20 minute stint last year and making an impact for 30 minutes! Team Manager Gary Hughes also came on which would later serve the death blow to Kelso. Kelso started the half more strongly of the 2 teams and after some good pressure, were awarded with a try for their efforts. A reply soon came when Hughes slotted a long range Penalty to keep the us ahead. Kelso soon replied from a well secured lineout, and took advantage of a disorganised Jed Lineout, and drove through making some excellent yards before shifting the ball and scoring. The game was now 17-15 to Kelso. With 5 minutes remaining, Jed threw everything, Bodies, Boots and the Team Manager, at a desperate Kelso defence. A mistake by either team would of cost them the game and on the Kelso 22 – the mistake came and the penalty was awarded to Jed 2nds. The next move almost gave Forwards Coach Connor Hogg a heart attack when Hughes decided to quick tap and go. Luckily his master plan of getting closer to the posts paid off and Kelso were penalised again for not be back 10. Gary then ended the game with a kick between the sticks to end it 18-17 to Jed. Every player who came on to the pitch put the work in. The defense was unreal at times, tackling vastly improved, the overall aggression from the team was bordering on insanity at times but every player done their job and earned this hard victory. Player Of The Day – Jamie Hynd. Put in a big shift all game and gave a kelso player a good bump off. Notable performances also came from EVERY player on pitch. Andrew Thomson pulled double duty by playing for us and benching for the 1sts. Senior Player Of The Day – Ali Campbell for putting in a excellent shift and making himself known in the breakdown area. The Team – Arran Storrie, Finlay Robb, Nicky Bates, Kieran Scott, Chris Page, Incredible Jeff Brown, Ross Marshall, Jamie Hynd, Andrew Thomson, Jack Fraser, Oliver Robertson, Euan Munro, Scott Blackie, Richard Jackson, Kris Rowley, Sandy Degnan, Gary Hughes, Steven Scott, Grant Johnstone and Ali Campbell Dick Of The Day – Kelso Prop (Former jed Prop) Allan Frame for getting dicked in the scrum. LVP – Martin Chisholm, Mathew Wilson, Monty Mitchell, Callum Liddle, James Rowley ETC for missing this! Gary Hughes was a candidate for making the entire team hearts stop with his ‘planned’ quick tap at the end. Next League game is away to Murrayfield 2nds at the end of November. Could Players continue to come to training to try and maintain some degree of fitness. This game proved we have the talent to win. Please let Gary, Monty or Connor know if you cant make it.
