Jeff Dietrich (DL-Senior Machine Tech), Chris Thompson (DL-MI Production Supervisor) and Keith Goodale (PELSafety/Environmental Manager), recent JRB University graduates identified a Flat Stock Supply Improvement in the Accessories Department and elected to address this as their Leadership Project. They found that Plastatech’s 2013 scrap improvements had decreased available flat stock, starving Accessories of material needed for their products. As a result, the Accessories personnel were cutting “good” rolls of membrane at Tri-City Vinyl for flat stock. The team’s project was to identify a new process for providing flat stock to be used as raw material for the Accessory Department. After analyzing several options, the team decided to utilize butt rolls (rolls < 30 feet) off the hot air carousel. This process eliminated outside transportation using a forklift; material is now transported on the tugger train. Only one person from the cell is needed to cut flat stock. It limits end-to-end welding, reduces t-welds and keeps the machine in cycle. The process is in place at the Saginaw and Carrollton locations and will see a $75,000 cost savings at the Saginaw plant. During the project, the team coined the phrase: “fix the problem with a cost save”. Thank you to the team for their idea, implementation and success!
