Jeffrey, I really liked your Press letter about Mark Sadler and would so like it to be on my Facebook page. Would that be possible? I never knew him, would avoid him actually (shamefully) seeing him as some ragged, half-starved saint on his dreadful bike, but revered his mind. Jackie Steincamp From: Jeffrey Paparoa Holman Kia ora Jackie. That is very kind of you to say so, and yes, of course you may. Its public property once published, anyway. I can understand why he might be avoided; he could deliver the odd monologue and be a bit testy - but he was a necessary human to our times. Great funeral, lots of revelations as always: Mark going to Fiji and acting as a champion to underpaid women cutting sugar cane and getting fired for his troubles; Mark dodging the cops as he rode un-helmeted his venerable cycle. A true character, as if out of the pages of the Dickens he loved. Cheers Jeffrey The Editor The Press I note with some sadness the recent death of one of The Presss veteran letter writers, Mark D. Sadler. Mark has been a feature of the Letters Page at least since the 1970s when I was a student here at the Universitys old town site. His leftwing analysis of national and international affairs and his dogged persistence in challenging the status quo will be sorely missed. Agree with his Keynesian leanings or not, Mark was always on the side of those less privileged than himself and a fine example of conspicuous under-consumption. On his old bike in his weathered jacket, he was a distinctive figure on the street, as he popped up out of nowhere to visit anyone he suspected of enjoying a good debate on economics and politics. We shall not see his like again I feel, nor the world that goes with him. Some applaud the withering of the welfare state, but not me. The gap between those that have and those that have not – something Mark would never have voted for – grows wider and deeper. When a man dies, a library burns down, as the proverb truly says, so true of this good man. Yours sincerely Jeffrey Paparoa Holman EDGEWARE
