Jehovah:The Man Of War TEXT: DEUTERONOMY 2:26-37 KEY VERSE: “But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us passby him: for the LORD thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as appeareth this day” (Deuteronomy 2:30). In our text, Moses recounted the goodness of God to Israel in the course of their journey from Egypt. He explained to the people that their movements were ordered by God. He recalled that in some instances, Israel overran their enemies who tried to ambush them or prevent them from passing through their territories. There were other times, like the case of Heshbon, where owners of the land vehemently refused Israel passage despite much plea. Those countries that denied them passage were crushed through divine help. That was what happened to Sihon, king of Heshbon. He must have deluded himself into thinking that he could forestall the move of God and His people. How foolish this turned out to be! The Christian journey is like that of Israel from Egypt to Canaan. There are enemies on the way to hinder. The degree of opposition may differ: while some may not be so vicious, others might be ruthless. But nomatter the presentation, believers must be ready at all times to listen to God on how todeal with each challenge. Moses, despite the assault from Heshbon, was able to recount that “there was not one city too strong for us; the LORD our God delivered all unto us.” Be sure of this: every Goliath on your path will be eventually crushed because no one can successfully battle the Lord. God is more than enough to contend with all enemies. Once we choose to serve Him faithfully and follow Him doggedly, His promise rings throughout history that: “I will make all thine enemies turn their backs on thee.” THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: We are more than conquerors through Christ.
