Jennifer Cartter asked, Im looking for suggestions, please, to help my son learn to love reading. He is almost 9, and halfway through 3rd grade. He is currently in public school, but well be homeschooling starting in July. He has high-functioning autism, along with ADHD (among other things). Hes also been diagnosed with a reading-comprehension disorder (though I think hes really dyslexic - still working on getting him evaluated for that). His reading level, however, is somewhere around the end of 1st grade/beginning 2nd grade, and he is in Special Ed. for it. Aside from all that, he loves being read to. and loves the concept of reading books hes into, but hates doing the actual reading himself. I currently require him to read for 15 minutes daily, but I cant relate to his difficulty in enjoying reading, as I love to read myself. Does anyone have any suggestions to make reading easier or more fun for him? I want him to be able to improve his reading skills and come to enjoy reading, but I hate that he views his mandated reading time as more of a punishment than anything else. Any suggestions/recommendations are welcome. Thank you!
