Jeremiah sets an example of faithfulness to the Word of God in the - TopicsExpress

Jeremiah sets an example of faithfulness to the Word of God in the face of adversity in Jer. 26-28. In the days leading up to the Babylonian captivity, Jeremiah was told to stand in the court of the Lord’s house and declare the message of God to the people (26:2). When he did as God commanded the priests and prophets seized him and called for his death (26:8). Jeremiah was then brought before the princes of Israel. Instead of caving under the pressure, he stood firm and called them to amend their ways (26:13). The princes declared that Jeremiah did not deserve to die and he was released (26:24). Upon his release Jeremiah put yokes around his neck and walked through the cities declaring that Judah would come under the yoke of bondage in Babylon (27:6-7). Jeremiah was confronted by a prophet named Hananiah who rebuked Jeremiah and declared that the Lord would break the yoke of Babylon and restore Jerusalem within two years (28:10-11). Jeremiah pronounced the death on the false prophet and that prophecy was fulfilled that year (28:17) I was challenged by today’s reading to remain faithful to the message of God and to obey the Lord regardless of the response from others. However, we must be certain we are proclaiming the Word of God and not our opinions. The message of God has been given to us in the Bible. All of our opinions and statements must be evaluated by it. However, when we know we are standing on the Word of God we must stand regardless of the reaction of others. Jeremiah did that in his day and we should do the same in our day. In a day when tolerance is the cardinal virtue, it is easy to seek the favor of man rather than the approval of God.
