Jess Armine 2 hrs · Several people have asked me what would be considered an aggressive G.I. repair program. Given several of the posts allow me to give a short explanation of the purpose and process of a G.I. repair program. The leaky gut syndrome is significant because it allows antigens to pass through the G.I. barriers and engage the immune system. This causes immune upregulation and subsequent immune dysregulation leading to all manner of symptomatology. The immune up regulation comes in the form of increased antibodies with names like IgG, IGE, IGM, IGA. Allergists are usually concerned with the IGE antibodies as they result in histamine release. Too much histamine can cause all kinds of havoc in the body including leaky cells, increased inflammation, anaphylaxis, etc. but be advised that the other immunoglobulins are the reason for increased inflammation also. This is why it is stated that the gut is the great source of inflammation. The G.I. tract is made of several layers. The extrinsic barrier is a mucus layer designed to trap antigens and allow SIgA to bind them up. Also the mucus layer is a place for the biota to live. The intrinsic barrier is what you usually see. Those cells that appear to have a brush on top of them (often called the brush border). These cells have tight junctions between them to prevent antigens from getting into the basement membrane called the Lamina Propria. And finally there is the immune system itself sitting in areas called Peyers Patches. In all my consultations I generally find that the advice given by health care providers to patients to repair the G.I. tract is lacking in one or two areas. Generally speaking G.I. repair should include the following factors. Re-creation of the mucus layer with the use of partially soluble fibers. Support for the cell membranes in the form of phospholipids, animal fats and arachidonic acid (sacrilege, I know). Digestive enzymes to support the complete breakdown of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Appropriate probiotics to support the immune system and the Th1/Th2 balance. Its been my experience that proper attention to repair of the G.I. tract will afford numerous and extensive benefit for all inflammatory conditions/chronic illnesses. Further, when I say aggressive G.I. repair program, I am alluding to the fact that all the above parameters should be attended to by the healthcare provider when prescribing a program to heal the G.I. tract.
