Jesse Nolan and Tessa Thompson about the new SLEEPING AT NIGHT video: When Justin Simien approached Caught a Ghost do a couple of songs for the Dear White People soundtrack, we were thrilled and honored, being truly inspired by both the film and the music in it. One of the things I find so amazing about Dear White People is the way in which it handles the concept of identity . In the film, the characters are constantly crafting their identities, attempting to overcome their binary ways of thinking that thrive on opposition. I wanted to make a video that reflected our own take on this idea. In the song Talkin World War III Blues, Bob Dylan famously says: Ill let you be in my dreams if I can be in yours. We took this idea as a jumping off point and a truth about humanity in general. All of us our constantly constructing our identities, trying to build something concrete out of smoke and mirrors. We constantly try to achieve a balance of light and dark, black and white, to reflect exactly the image we want others to see. In truth, each of us contains a boundless universe within us, and our fragile selves are merely a dream that we allow others to participate in. The SLEEPING AT NIGHT video follows two characters who travel through the looking glass, traveling from the ennui of their physical world to a colorful dreamscape, meeting on the other side.
