Jesus Paid the Price It is by the death of Jesus Christ that our consciences are genuinely cleared so that we can serve God and bear fruit. 14 He gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for Himself a special people, eager to do good works. Titus 2:14 (HCSB) 14 how much more will the blood of the Messiah, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse our consciences from dead works to serve the living God? Hebrews 9:14 (HCSB) Obviously, from Hebrews 9:14 above, having a clean conscience precedes serving the living God. This area of conscience is where the cross of Jesus Christ can be seen to be so glorious as compared with the programs and gimmicks of man. In order to serve God we must have the conscience cleansed, but only the blood of Jesus can cleanse it. No psychology, wisdom of man, or works man can perform is able to cleanse the conscience of man. How does this work practically? Simply this: when my conscience accuses me and Im reminded of my sins, I run to the cross of Jesus Christ and remember that I am forgiven and made new. When my conscience assaults me with thoughts of the past and discouragement sets in, I hurry to the cross to see the blood of Jesus flowing from His wounds, and I am reminded that my sins were already paid for and that I am justified through Jesus death. This exercise is not at all some kind of new age visualization technique, or the repeating of some meaningless mantra, but rather it is the full rejoicing in forgiveness purchased for me at the cross. Christians are those who are learning to appeal to the cross to both answer accusations against us, and cleanse a defiled conscience within us.
