Jesus saved me. Jesus even snuck me out of Mexico illegally. Have you ever woken up on the side of a Mexican highway wondering what youre doing with your life? Then after a few minutes walk you find some toasted tortillas in a bag.. They look only a few day old. Itll do. Let me set the scene. I decided I was going to spend a night by the ancient Mesoamerican city of Teotihuacan so I could explore it in the morning. I ended up there in the afternoon and decided I couldnt wait until morning. By the time I was finished the sun was low and I thought I might as well start heading north. Ate like 10 big bananas for 6 pesos/ 50cents (5 were red bananas- my new favourite). Lots of walking, thumbing, getting chased and nearly wrecked by dogs and eventually I caught a ride in a truck a bit after 9pm. I didnt get too far because he was turning off in the wrong direction. I gave up and decided to sleep until morning. I put down my tent without the poles by the highway and went to sleep. Pretty rough night but i needed the sleep. In the morning I woke up, packed and got walking and trying to catch a ride. I are the toasted tortillas I found by the road and I saved a snake from being run over.. Then walked another 10km. The sun was getting to me and I was getting desperate for a ride. I found an on ramp so I could thumb people before they were heading at 120km/h. After about 20 minutes there a sparkling white chariot(..Or truck) pulled up. I climbed in and asked the driver his name. Yep. Jesus himself. In person. He got me to the next gas station about 40 minutes away and I caught another ride from there.. Then I was walking along just as the rain was starting and a truck pulled up that was heading right to Nuevo laredo(border of Texas). We head banged and rocked out to Spanish covers of popular rock songs through the night and I put on some parkway drive that he explained on the phone to his wife as Metallica. Slept a few hours and go to the border town about 15 hours later at 9am. Before he dropped me off he started telling me about all the people that have had their heads cut off there and how rival cartels are fighting for the city etc and saying dont make eye contact, dont hitch with anything but another semi truck and then he was drawing crucifixes and telling me to pray and send a message to my mum lol. He let me out and as soon as my thumb went up a truck stopped and i got in.. The guys name.. Jesus of course lol. He gave me a big drink and offered me food and took me away from the town... But eventually to a border crossing. I thought it was a bit weird.. And then he pointed out the river that was the border of Mexico and the United States as we crossed over the bridge.. Yep we had left Mexico and I hadnt payed the border tax. :) I walked into the United States crossing and when I got to the front of the line the homeland security guy was like uhhh.. This is a commercial border.. For truck drivers.. The public crossing is 20 miles away. He got on the phone anyway and 20 minutes later i was being violated and getting full body search done and my bags emptied. They then put me in a vehicle and drove me to another building where I was interviewed and eventually granted another 3 months visa waiver(the homeland security guy had to look up my friends I was heading to in San Antonio for address). I was then put in another vehicle an driven to a spot where I was able to pass through a gate into Laredo Texas. It was pretty full on but awesome. It felt good to be in the States and honestly.. The Mexican side was sketchy. It just looked sketchy. I headed for the freeway to San Antonio and there was a train line. I started day dreaming about hopping a freight and right as I did one pulled up next to me. I crossed through the bushes and in behind me came willy. He was like you about to hop this freight here? Here you gonna need some gloves. Thats where I met willy from the video I shared. Rode the freight until it turned off, caught a truck ride and got to North East San Antonio by the evening. Was an exciting end to my little Mesoamerican adventure. Spent today on the couch eating chocolate with old mate Ferron Fruean. Clothes are in the wash and Im showered.
