Jewel to open 5 former Dominick’s today Jewel-Osco, Chicago’s biggest grocer, said it will open five new former Dominick’s locations under its own banner on Tuesday. Two of the stores are in Chicago, at 1763 Howard St. and 424 W. Division. The others are in Merrionette Park, Fox River Grove and Lake Zurich. “Our business has picked up momentum over the last several months, and we have no intention of slowing down,” President Shane Sampson said in a news release. The Itasca-based supermarket chain, a unit of New Albertsons Inc., also announced that it will reopen 14 stores that have been remodeled, four of them former Dominick’s locations. When Dominick’s shut down last year, Jewel bought several of its stores and closed them for remodeling. In recent years, Jewel has been battered by competition from high-end brands like Mariano’s and Whole Foods as well as supercenters like Wal-Mart and Target. When New Albertsons bought the chain in January 2013, it was the third change in ownership in 13 years. Sampson was named CEO in March of this year. Earlier this year, the chain said it would invest about $100 million in new projects and store remodeling in 2014 in an effort to strengthen its market position.
