Jimi was the best of the best... As much as I love and admire Clapton (he is my biggest influence, but Jimi would have been had I not discovered Eric), even as much as he "stole" from Buddy Guy, he managed to make it his own voice (as well as Eric and Billy did from the people they "borrowed from," or "ripped off"). As much as Jimi (like many other blues or rock players) "nicked" from his predecessors, he managed to create his own voice, one that was inimitable but at the same time one worth "borrowing from." Again, back to Clapton, EC had a certain level of respect for Jimi, saw him as a peer if not one to aspire to, but the covers I have heard by Eric (Watchtower, Midnight Lamp and Stone Free), as well as his interpretation (via Derek and the Dominos) of Little Wing, showed that he was on the same page, whether or not he was, or considered himself to be, on the same level as Jimi...
