Joan is having a bad day. Her friend Mekia called her this morning to see if she was ready to go to her doctors appointment; she sounded OK then. When Mekia got there an hour later, Joan said she didnt feel well, and she was mumbling and incoherent. Mekia called 911; the EMTs had to restrain Joan to get her on the gurney. Mekia then called me, and I immediately told my supervisor I had to leave. Its 3-1/2 hours from Pontiac, MI to Ft. Wayne ... all the time my stomach was in a knot. Mekia filled me in when I got to the hospital. The staff had had to sedate Joan just so they could get the IV lines into her. Her hemoglobin is low, and shes running a slight fever. CAT scan of her head didnt show anything ... (in fact, her tumors there had shrunk due to radiation and chemo). Now its 7:00 pm, theyre giving her blood transfusions to get her hemoglobin back up. Shes still not very coherent mentally. Im keeping watch on her and praying for the best.
