Job Posting - Early Childhood Development Outreach Coordinator Position Summary The Métis Community Services Society of BC (MCSBC) has a mandate from the Métis citizens to provide integrated, holistic, family centered, wraparound services to all those who need assistance, with special emphasis on Aboriginal populations, specifically Métis populations. We are responsible for the development and implementation of a full complement of child services from preventative to Child Protection, via a unique relationship where co-located MCFD social workers are in our office working closely with the team and management. MCSBC is currently seeking a full time Qualified Early Childhood Development Outreach Coordinator. The ECD Outreach Coordinator will work in partnership with Aboriginal families and our early childhood department to provide outreach, family support, advocacy, child development and prevention services to Aboriginal families with children 0-6 years. The successful candidate will be a team player, and an interest in early childhood development. Qualifications/Skills and Abilities • Basic ECE Certificate or Diploma and/or Post Basic ECE certificates (Special Needs and Infant Toddler) an asset. Or a degree or diploma in a human services or related field and/or experience. • Minimum 3 years experience in an early childhood agency and/or community service sector. A demonstrated working knowledge of family centred service, early intervention, child development, family support and community based services, as well as family support worker experience • Knowledge of Métis culture and history • Familiarity with Aboriginal culture, language and traditions an asset and ability to relate well with Aboriginal children and families, as well as knowledge of social-economic issues effecting urban Aboriginal families and families on reserve • Working knowledge of early childhood developmental stages and strong knowledge of pregnancy issues, infant development, toddler stages, maternal and fetal health issues • Knowledge of social, cultural and recreational needs and interests of children and families an asset • Strong knowledge of local services and community resources • Ability to work professionally, collaboratively with children and their families as well as agency, community and MCSBC personnel • Passion and dedication for children and family programs • Must be patient, nurturing, non-judgmental and a positive role model to children and families • A valid emergency child care First Aid certificate and a clear tuberculosis test and immunization booster and a clear criminal record check • Ability to work independently and as part of a team with good interpersonal skills • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as basic computer skills including Microsoft Word and Outlook • Excellent facilitation skills • Hold a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s license and have own vehicle with appropriate auto insurance. Duties/Responsibilities: • Work in conjunction with the ECD department, Aboriginal Infant Development program, ASCD program, Head start Preschool and Family Development program to identify families that need ECD support and follow through with outreach to support families in a variety of capacities. • Respond to parents questions about child development and model positive parenting with families on your caseload • Provide outreach, home visits and family support to vulnerable and high risk families with children aged 0-6 years. • Create case history for each client and maintain files on families needs and progress and refer to other services when needed • To ensure progress notes – in file and on Nucleus labs data base, records, charts and monthly summary are completed • Transport clients to services and support programs when needed such as the food bank, hospital, etc as well as be able to set goals with the clients to meet their needs. • Use developmental tools such as the Ages and Stages questionnaire and Nippissing developmental screening to help parents learn about their child’s development in partnership with AIDP consultants • Strengthen and support families in their role as decision makers on behalf of their children and themselves and advocate for them when needed with such agencies as Ministry for Children and Family Development • Provide Educational materials on nutrition, pregnancy, and healthy living that is both universally and culturally appropriate. • Assist Peetigway Famii Early Years Family Circle on a weekly basis • Support capacity building within the Aboriginal community and establish relationships and liaise with the Aboriginal community Interested applicants are invited to submit a detailed resume and cover letter, including three references via EMAIL to: MCSBC #201 – 2949 Pandosy St. Kelowna, BC V1Y 1W1 Attn: Kelly L’Hirondelle [email protected] Deadline for Applications: August 29th, 2014 at 4:00pm.
