How and when does great reporting parlay into sound policy? What are strategies for reaching influencers, legislators, and opinion-makers? How can innovative reporting be translated from the page to live and interactive events? Join Mother Jones and learn how an award-winning news shop amplifies its voice. Fellows assist in all aspects of promotion and outreach for Mother Jones reporting including tracking impact, researching new opportunities, and generally tending to all of the department’s little-but-vital things. This opportunity includes ongoing skills-building in media relations and communications and broader trainings in all aspects of nonprofit publishing. Desired Skills: 1-2 years of public relations or communications experience, preferably within the media or policy industries Excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills Strong passion for journalism, keen understanding of the media landscape, and ability to think creatively about how to craft and deliver a message Acute attention to detail with the ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines intermittently Experience and comfort with all manner of digital and social media tools and platforms Experience with HTML, InDesign, and Google Analytics Prior experience handling logistics and execution of events Self-starter and team player Cool with being on the edge (the outskirts) of glory This fellowship is full-time and is based in San Francisco. Fellows receive a stipend of $1,000/month supported by grants from the Irving Harris and Lannan Foundations (and by the generosity of our nearly 39,000 contributors). The fellowship lasts six months, with the opportunity to apply for an additional six months as a senior fellow (at an elevated monthly stipend rate).
