Joe Kinnear revealed earlier this week that Newcastle were hopeful of signing not only the two striker targets of Loic Remy and Bafetimbi Gomis, but also another player that doesn’t play as a striker. While the tabloids have been speculating the arrival of a new goalkeeper, perhaps in the form of PSV’s Jeroen’s Zoet, we’ve also been linked with a number of new wingers, with Stewart Downing and Tom Ince’s names being mentioned. There’s no doubt that Newcastle need a new wide player to replace the somewhat past-it Jonas Gutierrez. Goals derive from quality in delivery, and with Jonas out wide, there’s a serious lack of that. Though paramount to a team’s success, the £8m fee quoted for Blackpool’s Tom Ince is just ridiculous. Instead, Newcastle should pursue a winger who has proven Premier League experience, can find his attacking partners with precision in delivery, and also has an eye for goal. And this, we believe, can be found in the form of Lille front man, Saloman Kalou. The former Chelsea player has set Ligue 1 alight this season, scoring 14 goals and making 3 assists in 25 appearances for the former French Champions. In spite of his impressive record, he has a buyout clause of just £2.6m. And has furthermore declared his interest in returning to the Premier League. West Brom have been heavily linked with the Ivorian in recent weeks, along with fellow Newcastle target Scott Sinclair. But, they have so far failed to complete a deal. The former Blue, who is French-speaking, would, in my opinion, fit straight into the Newcastle XI, his style suiting a side looking for attacking flair to compliment a powerful front two. He is known to be good friends with Newcastle stalwart and international teammate, Cheik Tiote, so maybe he can put in a word, similar to the role Cabaye played in the Debuchy deal last January.
