"Johannesburg – Lieutenant Colonel Christine Anderson, one of the officials found responsible for the Guptagate scandal in the government investigation, has asked Public Protector Thuli Madonsela to investigate the conduct of the government team set up to investigate the landing of the private aircraft at the Waterkloof base. According to a report on Eyewitness News Anderson believes the process of the government probe was irregular. The landing of the Gupta private jet at the Waterkloof airbase in April caused a public outcry to which the relevant Ministers responded swiftly. Several Ministers and high level officials held a press conference informing the public a ministerially-appointed team will investigate the matter. The investigation found the unauthorised landing of the private Gupta jet to be the result of the collusion by officials, including Anderson, against the express wishes of the Executive. The investigation found no evidence of the hand of President Jacob Zuma and his Ministers in the landing. The report received strong backlash by opposition parties in the snap debate in Parliament held on the matter. MPs were cynical and scathing about the claims of the Ministers to have been unaware of plans for the landing. “The panel of Ministers have reported that the President was not in charge and that they as Ministers, appointed by the President, knew nothing, detected nothing and authorised nothing. Therefore they could own up to nothing. As an executive, the President and the ministers, are disengaged from the very act of governing,” said Cope’s Mosiuoa Lekota in the Parliamentary Debate held in May. Many parties and civil society groups called for an independent investigation to be conducted by the office of the Public Protector. Earlier this week, Madonsela’s office confirmed that the evaluation conducted by her office over whether or not to probe the scandal is nearly complete. According to EWN the South African National Defence Force has declined to comment on Anderson’s complaint."
