They do that when they get big, too. I visited a heritage farm in Rhode Island once... I think it was the Colton farm... And there was one of these huge sway back pink pigs sunning himself up next to the fence. I walked by, not even a stir. I spoke softly Are you a friendly? Did not stir. Hmmm. Now... we didnt raise pigs on the farm, but I am familiar with how violently they can react to surprise... still... I cautiously reached down (with my weight on my other foot ready to get out of range) to scratch the pigs shoulders. The eyes flashed open, and it instantly shifted to allow for a better scratch... grunt grunt grunt grunt It was beginning to sound human... yeah... no translation needed there. A few months later I was at the Buttonwood Zoo in New Bedford. I was rather admiring the barn, actually, at the farm section. Then I started to feel a stare boring into me. I looked down and there was this sow staring at me. Well hello. I said Do you want something? She tossed her head slightly, walked over to the fence where I was standing and deliberately presented butt. I guess I got my answer! I said as those that were standing near were laughing... and of course I obliged by scratching her haunches. Same grunting. Heh... inter-species language, that...
