John Hartford Song Writing Contest Rules and Information The contest is now open for entries! Entrants will be pre-judged and notified shortly after the deadline for entries which is Sunday, midnight, May 4th, 2014. Winners will be contacted shortly after. A $10 entry fee and application must be submitted for each song entry. Each entry must be individual and separate. Enter as many songs as you would like. Entry fees for multiple entries may be combined into one payment. Registration information: Include your Name, email address, telephone number, with your song title, & song lyrics and a brief statement about how you heard about our contest. Please provide on site contact info in case of schedule changes. PLEASE READ THE RULES. Email your song as an MP3. Attach the MP3 and email your registration information to John Hotze: [email protected]. Only MP3 files will be listened to. Submit your payment to the website via the provision to pay listed at the website. If you are a performer at JHMF IV, you must check your performance schedule with the songwriters showcase schedule to assure that they do not conflict. The showcase will be held at 11:30 a.m., on Friday at the Main Stage. The program will last one hour. The 1st place winner will perform two songs- the winning song and a song of choice, acoustic instruments only, no drums. 2nd place through 7th place will perform their entry. The top 7 winners may perform solo or with up to three accompanists. Winners must perform into a single mic provided by our professional sound crew. You will not be allowed to plug in your instruments. The Rules Acoustic, lyrical songs only. Instrumental breaks are not necessary and will not be figured in the scoring. Songs must be less than five minutes in length. Song entry must match performerss capability. You must enter the song in the same way you will be allowed to present it if you win. In other words, do not submit a whopper of a studio production. Submit what you can perform on stage as listed in these guidelines. Lyrics must be typed out and submitted along with the MP3 recording. Lyrics must mention one of the following subjects: John Hartford. At least one of John Hartfords song titles. If using a John Hartford song title, it must be listed on the lyric sheet, right under the title of your entry. You may enter the song you entered in our previous contest as long as it is not the first place song. Songs will be judged on originality, melodic, and lyrical content and WILL NOT be judged on performance. The point system used for judging is shown below, with a maximum of 500 points. Quality of Lyric Subject Matter -- 100 points 5. Quality of Lyric Structure -- 100 points Entrants retain all rights to their songs. We will announce the winners of the Songwriting contest via this website, johnhartfordmemfest and the JHMF Facebook page and this contest page, shortly after the entry deadline, Sunday, midnight, May 4th,2014. We will contact the winners of the contest via telephone and/or email. If a winner cannot attend the festival, they may still claim their place on their resume or website, however, they will forfeit their prizes to next highest scorer who is present at the festival. 1st place wins two full festival tickets and a hand-made trophy plaque. 2nd place and 3rd place wins two full festival tickets. 4th through 7th must purchase festival tickets. Additional prizes may be added leading up to the festival. Keep checking the John Hartford Memorial Festival Songwriting and Old Time Fiddle Contest for updates. Contestants who purchase tickets in advance and win 1st, 2nd or 3rd place passes, will be reimbursed their ticket cost at the gate upon presenting proof of entry, identification, and verification by the gate personnel. Your name will be on the guest list. Booked entertainers who win passes may transfer their passes to someone else. This must be done, by email or snail mail, to John Hotze at the above address, no later than ten days before the festival.
