John Jay baseball team cruises past Cornwall, 9-2, in regional final; Indians advance to state final four for first time DUTCHESS STADIUM - The John Jay High baseball team continued its torrid run through the playoffs Tuesday night, putting a 9-2 whipping on Cornwall - the defending Class A state champion - to advance to the NYS final four for the first time in school history. John Jay is scheduled to face 18-2 Williamsville South (Buffalo) Saturday at 1 p.m. at NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton in the state semifinal. The winner plays for all the marbles at 4 p.m. Tuesday night against Section 9 champion Cornwall, senior captain Sam Mines picked up the win on the mound, going 6.1 innings, allowing six hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Scott Michaels came on in relief and got the final two outs. “They only hit one ball well,” Jay Manager Geoff Curtis said. “That was in the only inning they scored (two runs in the second). It was a well-played game against a quality program. It was an exciting opportunity for us, and the boys continued on the tear they’ve been on... Mines was outstanding, and our pitching staff has been outstanding in the playoffs. Chris Ciliberti got his first start at second base and played well for us, and picked up a big RBI at a crucial point.” The Cross River Tribe - winners of 11 straight - pushed two runs across in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead, and a five-run sixth blew the game open. Jason Valvano went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, and Jack Weiller was 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Indians.
