John Lennon and Paul McCartney first met in the summer of 1957 in the suburbs of Liverpool. Paul, who had just turned 15, watched John, who was 18 months older, front a set by his band, The Quarrymen. introduced afterward by a mutual friend, Paul picked up a guitar and showed off his stuff. A member of the band watching them said they circled each other like cats. Johns interest was immediately piqued and he was wary in equal measure. I dug him, he said later. He wanted Paul in his band. But he had concerns, too. I half thought to myself, Hes as good as me, Lennon said. Id been kingpin up to then. Now I thought, if i take him on, what will happen? When John took on Paul and Paul took on John a great many things happened. How do we account for the explosive work they did together? On the most basic level, the two covered for each others deficit and made way for each others strengths. Pauls melodic sunshine smoothed out Johns bluesy growls, while Johns soulful depth gave ballast to Paul and kept him from floating away.
