John Nankin for some reason FB wasnt giving me the option to comment on your post so Ive copied your questions here: 1. did the idea come to you fully formed i.e. Mandela - Big Glasses - Ray-Ban will pay, or did you have part of this puzzle and then add other bits, say Ray Ban, in order to get the work realised? Perceiving Freedom as a piece about perception on Camps Bay beach. At this point I approached Ray-Ban. (In brief, the lenses were going to be mirrored, conceptually talking about the disparity between how we view the world and how the world sees us). Then I was given the site on the promenade and the concept evolved. First orientation to Robben Island (paradise or prison?) then I was shown a pic of Mandela wearing similarly shaped glasses while on Robben Island and all the pieces started to fall into place conceptually. ie the clear lenses etc 2. Is there any truth in the rumour on the street that you were talking about a similar work a while ago, for Camps Bay beach, that had no linkage to Nelson Mandela? Correct 3. Did you spell out to the Nelson Mandela Foundation the implied interconnections between this work, Perceiving Freedom, Ray Ban , Nelson Mandela and the image on the island called A Prisoner in the Garden? YES copied from my emails from The Mandela Foundation Dear Michael Amazing work! Thank you. We can provide you with a high res copy of the original photo. Please let me know if you can adhere to the following conditions of use: You can only use the image once for the explanation board. The image should not be shared with third parties and must be destroyed after use. Credits to be used are: National Archives of South Africa. --------------------------------------------------------- I also sent the foundation the full press release and invitation to the unveiling. John Nankin - Finally, I have studied the Ray-Ban catalogue. You are not correct. There are Wayfarer model variants that do not have the well known logo Ray-Ban written on them. They have, as does your RB Wayfarer (Luxotticas description of the unveiling) the two shiny ellipses of metal on each corner. I genuinely didnt know that. Hope this reply helps
