John Pilgers new documentary, Utopia holds up a mirror to - TopicsExpress

John Pilgers new documentary, Utopia holds up a mirror to Australia and its history in relation to its first people. Through this, it is an uncomfortable image that we see. True, it is through a lens that is biased (and justifiably so) towards the indigenous people of our country, but there is just a sense of unrelenting and undeniable truth that we are yet to fully face and own as a nation. As we remember the story of Easter again this year, we will hear the story of Jesus suffering in the Garden of Gesthemane. We will hear Jesus utter those powerful words, Stay with me. Remain here with me. Watch and pray. Of course we know the outcome of this story, with the disciples failing to understand, have compassion and lacking the strength of character either to accept Jesus suffering or too caught in their own issues to notice. Dare we in the Uniting Church actually promote and encourage our members to watch and pray in this hardest of situations? Or will we continue to remain asleep? One of the saddest things if you listen to John Pilger talking about his film is that they are able to mix in film shot 20 years ago with that of recent times and there be no way to tell the difference because nothing - not little - has changed. This is something that we need to continue and more intentionally face and address. vimeo/78062545
