John Walker started giving the Soviets cryptographic keying - TopicsExpress

John Walker started giving the Soviets cryptographic keying material in 1967, the year I made my first Polaris missile patrol on the George Washington. This material allowed the Soviets to listen in on our fleet broadcast in near real time. He continued doing this through 1976, my last year as Executive Officer on the George Washington Carver. Walker did enormous damage to national security. The Soviets did, however, become convinced of the effectiveness of our submarine force and were forced to spend enormous amounts in a futile attempt to match our capabilities. His timely death prevented the travesty of a parole.
