John Wesley did not intend to secede from the Anglican Church, he wished to reform the Anglican Church from within. But before his death in 1791, his followers had formed three groups – the Wesleyan Methodists, the Calvinist Methodists and the Anglican Evangelicals. The Calvinist Methodist group led by George Whitefield became the leading missionary force to America while the Wesleyan Methodists and the Anglican Evangelicals proceeded to Africa. Eventually, America and Africa had to become the greatest Pentecostal strongholds in the world. Thus, the evangelical revival of the 18th century gave birth to Pentecostal movement in the 20th century
