Johnny Cash Rolled into San Quentin Prison, 12 miles and change north of San Francisco, on February 24, 1969. Cash had performed at Folsom Prison outside Sacramento just over a year earlier, where he recorded a live version of what would become one of his most famous songs, Folsom Prison Blues. But this second jailhouse show, recorded for the album At San Quentin, was different. It was less two-step, more rock and roll. Cashs country and gospel roots were still there, sure, but he was looser, heavier, a little more weathered. As the All Music Guide notes, Cash wasnt so much performing for prisoners inside the states oldest prison; he seemed like one of them—an outlaw. Like No Other..
