Join us at the Nevada County Historical Society’s Speaker Night - TopicsExpress

Join us at the Nevada County Historical Society’s Speaker Night presentation on June 20 when author, Jan Westmore, will speak about the building of the transcontinental railroad and the symbiotic relationship between Colfax and Nevada City/Grass Valley, especially during the 19th Century. Colfax served as the distribution center for supplies and mail to foothill towns and miners’ claims. The town received gold en route to banks and produce for transfer to markets. Modes of transport ranged from horseback, wagon, and stagecoach until the building of the railroad. Ferries gave way to toll roads then to rails. The construction of the transcontinental railroad, followed by the narrow gauge railroad, enabled not only a more efficient transfer of goods but also a window into national markets. Arcadia Publishing recently released Images of America: Colfax, a photographic history of Colfax, the railroad and neighboring towns. Jan will share some of her photographs and maps of the area during that period. The presentation, one of a monthly series, is held in the Gene Albaugh Conference Room of the Madelyn Helling Library in Nevada City; it is open for public attendance, and admission is free. Refreshments are provided. Presentation starts at 7:00 pm and last approximately one hour. For more information contact President Daniel Ketcham at (530) 477-8056 When: June 20th 7:00 pm.
