Join us on “Sojourner Truth” with host Margaret Prescod on the ground in Washington DC from the studios of WPFW, as we continue our week of special broadcasts on Pacifica Radio marking the 50th anniversary of the historic March on Washington as well as the 150th anniversary year of the Emancipation Proclamation. , On Thursday, August 29th, the day after events that marked the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, we get a roundup of the voices of participants in and speakers from the platform from the “Let Freedom Ring Commemoration and Call to Action” event in Washington DC. Speakers included President Barack Obama, Jamie Fox, the Rev. Bernice King, President Jimmy Carter, Christine Ferris King and others. And, we continue to hear the voices of the unsung heroes, of those who made the civil rights movement possible. Guests include the Rev. James Lawson, known as the father of the non-violent movement in the United States. Rev. Lawson helped to train not only Dr. King but the young activists in the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, Congress and others in non-violent civil disobedience. Also, Bernard Lafayette, a freedom rider and another icon of the civil rights movement. Among facing other dangers, he was on the bus that was viciously attacked by the Ku Klux Klan and by an angry white mob in Montgomery, Alabama in 1961, yet he held firm and would not back down.
