Jon Young and Dr. J. Drew Lanham will combine forces to bring you an AWESOME two part workshop on the subject of Nature and the Art of Communication on Friday of the 2014 MAEOE Environmental Education Conference. First, Jon Young, an expert on animal tracking and bird language will explain the practical uses of these two ancient practices. Dr. Lanham will build on this session as he focuses on using place-based writing, memoir, and poetry to breach the gaps between science, sociology, and conservation advocacy to move the conversations about nature and natural history into a brighter light and to more diverse audiences. Nature & the Art of Communication: Expanding our Capacity to Immerse, Understand, & Communicate with Diverse Audiences Full day workshop Bring more presence to all that you do. Deepen your connections to nature, self, and others. Be more sensitive and attentive. Communicate nature. PART ONE (9 am - 12 pm) Jon Young: Bird Language - How to Interpret the Behavior & Patterns of Nature “Deep bird language is an ancient discipline, perfected by Native peoples the world over. Finally, science is catching up. . .” Author of What the Robin Knows, Jon Young is on the leading edge of animal tracking and understanding bird language. In the morning, Jon Young will give you tools to interpret the natural world through understanding bird language. Open to all experience levels, this workshop is ideal for naturalists, birders, educators, parents, hunters, and all those that enjoy spending time in the woods and want to know what is happening that you cannot see. Understanding the language of birds – what they are telling each other and what they are telling us – will enrich your life in practical & surprising ways, helping you to embody the attributes that lead to success in many areas of your life. PART TWO (12 pm - 3 pm) Dr. J. Drew Lanham: Word Painting - Nature Writing to Inspire & Inform Informed by the morning portion of the workshop, particiants will shift focus to communicating their nature-based experiences in the afternoon. Participants will focus on using place-based writing, memoir, and poetry to breach the gaps between science, sociology, and conservation advocacy to move the conversations about nature and natural history into a brighter light and to more diverse audiences. The Chesapeake and Coastal Bays and the Delmarva Peninsula provide dramatic natural backdrops of ocean, salt marsh, estuary, and forest habitats that will inspire participants to think about how best to blend their words together with science and sensuality to evocatively paint word portraits - whether they be journal entries, essays, poems, or blog posts - that are technically precise, emotionally riveting, and widely engaging.
