Joondalup Weekender Calm before the strike against the Taipans 14/Nov/2013 Greg Hire Comments: THE NBL season can be a long one, running from October to late April, plus pre-season, which can be longer for some players than others. For us, the bye week came at the perfect time. After spending considerable time on the road the past fortnight, it was nice to finally stay at home with our families and friends. This is integral in not only keeping the body fresh, but also the mind. The club was fantastic in organising a lawn bowls event for the whole staff. This was not only a fantastic way to let the players and staff members unwind, but also develop the relationship between the two. The organisation and its employees do a fantastic job in presenting a world-class basketball product to the community. The lawn bowls event saw big Tom Jervis put up his hand for a post-basketball career as a specialist lawn bowls player. I’m not sure whether it was skill or that his arms reached halfway down the track! This week has us up against a very strong opponent in the Cairns Taipans at Perth Arena. They have dropped a couple of games, but I expect them to be up and about at the business end of the year. I would like to finish off by congratulating James Crawford for his induction into the NBL Hall of Fame. The ‘Alabama Slammer’ is one of my all-time favourite Wildcats players. His freakish athletic ability was a sight to behold. It’s also great to hear he will be in Perth following his induction and will be speaking at a special lunch with Wildcats fans.
