Josh Fattal, and two friends, became lost while hiking in 2009 in Iraqi Kurdistan and inadvertently crossed a border into Iran. The Three American Hikers were arrested and held hostage as political prisoners with an 8 year sentence, but released after 2 years and 2 months (mostly spent in solitary confinement). Therefore, when I was asked to drive Josh Fattal to Phila.s Amtrak Station, after his local book signing/speaking engagement, I was a rather anxious, as anyone who knows me can attest to my penchant for also getting quite lost. Having been justifiably admonished not to say anything stupid during the 1/2 hour car ride (and, not to get lost!), I tried to keep the conversation light. Learning that Mr. Fattal and I coincidently both graduated from Cheltenham High School, I figured Id engage him with mutually fond memories of happy times before his traumatic detainment: Me: So, what year did you graduate from CHS? Fattal: 2000. Me: Have you been to any reunions? Fattal: No. Me: I had a lot of fun at my 10 Year Reunion. It was great catchin-up with friends. Fattal: I was in prison in Iran during my 10 year reunion. Me: Oh... eh, yeah...
