Joy from the Monastery JoyNotes- July 17, 2013 - Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Good Morning Good People, Yesterday we celebrated the feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. Most will recall the story of how Our Lady of Mt. Carmel appeared to St. Simon Stock and asked him to spread devotion to the brown scapular. In fact for most Catholics Our Lady of Mt. Carmel is associated with their first Holy Communion as it has long been a tradition to receive a brown scapular and enroll (the recipient) in Our Lady’s fraternity. With Our Lady’s feast falling in between the “Vocare” weekend, the Steubenville Youth Conference in Spokane, and also the big event of World Youth Day, the discussion seemed to turn to the devotions which seemed to inspire the different participants. We recognized the fact that many of the young people with whom we come into contact at the vocation events are drawn to some devotions which some might call old fashioned. The youth are affected deeply by Eucharistic Adoration, praying the Rosary, wearing a brown scapular, reciting the chaplet of Divine Mercy, attending Mass at least once a week, and even reading their bible or You Cat. Perhaps you find yourself listening to the Rosary or Divine Mercy Chaplet as you drive to work? We think that Blessed John Paul II must be quite pleased with the turnouts for World Youth Day, as well as our recent and current Popes. It is so uplifting to see the spark lit in young peoples’ hearts when they are exposed to having a relationship with Jesus. They are so hungry today for the Gospel truth. You can imagine how many of the youth who have attended WYD in the past have responded to the call to become more active in the Church today. Won’t you join with us as we pray for those who will be attending WYD in Rio next week? Please pray for our young people as they encounter Jesus this summer, and continue to pray for vocations to our wonderful Church. Blessing of Peace and Good to All!
