Judas Priest w/ Steel Panther @ Bell Centre Timing is everything in the world of popular music. Be it pop, rock, punk, metal etc., with that being said it really says something when you can stand the test of time. Theres a lot of variables involved in longevity. In this case it must be said that Judas Priest took a while to explode. Much like Whitesnake and a few others they were around for a few years before achieving substantial success. But it seems that once they found their niche it was right in the nick of time for the metal scene that exploded in the early 80s. Anyone who grew up during this time and was a fan of that movement cant dispute that frontman Rob Halford should comfortably fit in the high council of metal vocal legends like Bruce Dickinson, Dio, Ozzy, Alice Cooper and a few others. And his persona is no less iconic. And its this persona combined with the bands legendary catalogue of metal classics that keep them at their status. Now given that I must say I was somewhat surprised at the low attendance. But then again I was still more confused that Alice Cooper was opening for Iron Maiden a few years ago. Funny how that goes. Regardless, I thought it was great. They flawlessly bashed out my teenage memories of sitting in my buddies room spinning years of their greats on vinyl. Anyone that followed them wouldve been grinning cheek to cheek through songs like Love Bites, Turbo Lover (one of my faves), Living After Midnight, Another Thing Coming and even closing with Defenders Of The Faith. And Halford still rides motorcycle out on stage and sings Hell Bent For Leather while sitting on it regardless of an accident he once had on stage. The few complaints Id make are the fact that he didnt sing a word of Breaking The Law but instead insisted on a 4min instrumental while he offered the crowd to sing it. He also didnt sing the chorus to Turbo Lover. As well as the exclusion of my favourite Priest tune, Painkiller. But Ill stomach that based on how hard it is to sing especially at his age. Scott Travis is a monster drummer and I would have loved to have seen him bash out that drum intro. Now Steel Panther are what they are, a novelty band. Theyre fun and ridiculous. And its probably no coincidence that guitarist Russ Parish once played in Halfords early 90s band Fight. Im assuming thats how they got that gig. Now Steel Panther isnt the kind of band that Id buy albums from but theyre funny and entertaining. But after seeing them twice I got my fill. Ill only watch them if they open for other bands. Their stage banter isnt far off from what Blink 182 do as far as making derogatory jokes about girls and crap like that (coincidentally they make fun of Blink 182 in a song). At times its like something youd see at Just For Laughs festival. All in all Im happy I went and got what I expected in terms of value for my money. And I got to hang a friend I see maybe once a year so it was a treat!
