Judge warns Judiciary on graft Widespread corruption in the country’s judicial service and the negative perception of the Judiciary are denying thousands of the poor fair and impartial trials, the new Arua High Court Judge, Vincent Okwanga, has said. Speaking during a hand over ceremony in Arua on Wednesday, Justice Okwanga, said the negative perception that courts are for the rich undermines the judiciary’s professionalism. He said there was need for every member of the judiciary to make justice accessible and affordable for all, especially the poor. Public interaction “Let the public feel free to interact with all the judicial officers; we should avoid corruption tendencies. The negative perception leads to frustration, mob justice and lack of confidence in the service,” he said. Judicial corruption presents itself in the form of bribery to settle a case out of court or to rule in favor of a particular party. The outgoing Judge, Yasin Nyanzi, said there was need to strengthen judicial independence. “Court users, litigants and judges should be concerned and fight unfairness. We should make the courts user-friendly,” he said. Mr John Aciga, a resident in Arua town, said there was need for better training and remuneration for judicial officers.
