Julia Landon College Preparatory and Leadership Development School Curriculum Paper Course Title: Leadership in the Global Community Teacher: Ms. Lundsten Teacher Contact Information Ms. B. Lundsten [email protected] Blog located at duvalschools.org/landon under Electives Tab Mission Statement Our Mission at the Julia Landon College Preparatory and Leadership Development School is to create college bound students with a deep commitment to public service and a true understanding of their leadership skills within the global community. Course Goal The goal of the course is to help students recognize and understand some of the most important issues and problems that are affecting life on the planet. Using an interdisciplinary approach, students will explore the problems and current solutions. During the course students will examine issues related to: human rights, hunger/homelessness, health/safety, education, peace/friendship, and the environment. At the end of the course, students will be designing their own action plans for the topic of their choice. Course Objectives 1st Nine-Weeks: Students will examine, analyze, and think critically about current global issues. 2nd Nine-Weeks: Students will create a mini-documentary that examines a current global issue and trace its foundation. They will research a current global issue, showcase organizations that exist to support or recognize this issue, and create an i-Movie that demonstrates that the past is always present. 3rd Nine-Weeks: Students will extend upon their mini-documentary by designing an outreach project/product. Students will move from raising awareness to making a difference. 4th Nine-Weeks: Students put their projects into action, refine, and plan next steps. Extra Credit is available in the form of volunteer hours. Grade = Total points earned ÷ Total point’s possible Interactive Notebook 10 points per assignment · 2-3 assignments checked bi-weekly Homework 10 points per assignment · Choice of: random act of kindness reflection, philanthropic organization/person summary, or a reflection of topics studied that week due weekly · One new idea per week (checked monthly) · Update the “Facebook” bulletin board on a teen hero due once in the school year · Other assignments as assigned by the teacher. Journal 10 points each entry Projects Points vary by project Interactive Notebook THIS IS YOUR LIFE IN THIS CLASS. Every item that we complete in this class should be completed in your interactive notebook, and any item that is a handout should be glued or taped into your interactive notebook. This system will help you to stay organized in this class. Interactive notebooks will work as your portfolios for this class, and should not leave the classroom. Every other week 2-3 assignments will be chosen at random and checked by your teacher. You will know the day before the notebook check which assignments will be checked. I will look at your entire notebook, but only 4 assignments will count toward your notebook grade. Assignment Re-Do Policy If you have completed an assignment but are not satisfied with the grade that you receive, you may (within a limited time and at instructor’s discretion) redo an assignment in an attempt to get a better score. Please note the student will only have one opportunity to redo assignments. Revision of assignments, however have a time constraint. You have one week after the original due date turn in any redo work. All redo work must be approved by the instructor. Make-up Work Policy When a student is not able to attend class; upon return he/she should copy any notes from group members. Students should refer to Edmodo and the board calendar to find out what assignments were missed in the event of their absence. Worksheets missed are located in the gray bin. All students will be given the same amount of days that they were absent to make up ANY assignment. Late Work Policy All assigned work in this course is designed to help students master leadership skills. For this reason, students will be expected to complete 100% of the course work. If students do not complete assignments when they are assigned they will be expected to recover the material on their own time. Students will have an opportunity to turn in their interactive notebooks on a bi weekly basis. Students should turn in their work regularly in this course to demonstrate leadership capabilities. I will offer a grace period when necessary of 1 week for students to turn in their interactive notebooks for a grade. Extra Credit Students should not depend on extra assignments to attain their desired grade; they should instead work diligently to earn the desired grade through regular assignments. At any time throughout the year, students may download the “Community Service and Reflection Form” from Edmodo and complete volunteer hours for extra credit. Academic Integrity Julia Landon College Preparatory Leadership and Development School expects from its students a high level of responsibility and academic honesty.
