Julia got an update today from the gal who adopted Bogie and Ornrietta. She called right away to share it with me. I dont remember the last time I laughed that hard, so, of course, I have to share the fun with you! Bogie and Ornrietta have an enormous poultry yard at their new home. The gal also has several turkeys. One perfect prince of a bird is a broad-breasted turkey who currently tips the scales at nearly twenty-five pounds. Although enormous for a rooster, Bogie weighs only about ten. Well, Bogie was sunning himself on his perch in his new yard, enjoying the terrific weather. Ornrietta was strolling around the great big enclosed yard, pecking here and there at a succulent grub or worm or other gustatory delight and clucking contentedly to herself when the huge turkey lumbered out from behind a tree. He had been resting in the shade. This tom turkey had often seen Ornrietta before...but never without Bogie beside her. Now she was alone, unchaperoned, unprotected. Here was the chance of a lifetime. He was in love. He waddled rapidly toward her, gobbling endearments as he approached. His whole plump body jiggled with delight. He was intent upon conquest. Bogie and Ornrietta were raised together and have always been inseperable. One speaks of them in the same breath. Bogie has always been protective of his pretty little friend. She seldom strays very far away from him. She heard the gobbling noises, looked up from scratching for goodies, saw this chubby behemoth bearing down on her, and sounded the alarm with a series of loud clucks. The tom turkey stopped in front of Ornrietta and touched his beak to hers, still making turkey love noises. Ornrietta didnt have time to react. Bogie leaped down off of his lofty perch, charged the tom turkey (who outweighed him by at least fifteen pounds and was about three times as big), grabbed him by his wattles and began dragging him around the poultry run, belaboring him with his wings and scissored spurs, and screeching insults and threats. The poor turkey began simultaneously shrieking in terror and trying to retreat, but Bogie held on to his grip with the tenacity of a snapping turtle. Dust clouds rose as the battle progressed from a grassy area to bare dirt. Ornrietta paid little attention to the epic battle being fought over her virtue, and went back to foraging for bugs while the two males scrambled for leverage and beat their wings and screeched. Finally Tom Turkey broke free and took refuge behind the nearest tree while Bogie shook his feathers, kicked up some dirt in the direction of the quailing turkey, and marched back to Ornrietta, where he proceeded to preen and strut and crow for the next several minutes. I dont know about you, but when I heard this story I was reminded of Fuzzy dragging Bogie around a different chicken run. Do you think he was taking notes, and used this opportunity to practice the technique?
