Julia just adores the movie Soul Surfer and Bethany Hamilton. A few followers have suggested that I follow that example to get Julia back on her board. Bethany was several years older than Julia and was able to make the decision for herself to just get back out on the board. Julia is just a little girl. I know that the suggestion to just put Julia back out on her board is well intentioned but it is not something that would be helpful to her. If I force her and she is not ready it will just increase her anxiety and most likely cause her to shut down She may be just 8 years old but I need to respect her feelings about surfing Right now since she is still in her cast, getting back on the board is not even an option. It is during this time that we trying to help her deal with her fear. Sharing stories of others who have been hurt but got back on the board like Bethany Hamilton and even Surf dog Ricochet, the SURFice dog! I created this page for her so that she could see how others faced their fears. We have taken her to the beach where she was hurt and to see her surf coach. We have taken her to watch other surfers. She watches Bethanys movie every single day. We have helped her decorate her board with the stickers sent by SURFERS FOR AUTISM. Once Julia gets her cast off, I will be talking with the doctor about time frame of her getting back on the board. Then I take her lead. I will push but not force. In her time if she wants to get back on that board, I know she will. And when that time comes, Ill be behind her and I have a feeling many of her followers will be too! We do appreciate everyone who has shared stories, left message, given advice, sent mail and shared her page. Thank you for the encouragement and for making her smile!
