Julies Big Adventure is now over. I am home safely in Lincoln. I had a FABULOUS time, and Im certain that more such trips are in my future. If youre wondering why I didnt post during the trip, its because I opted to leave my laptop at home. And I have a phone but not a smart phone. I called my mommie every night as promised and sent a few random texts. Loved Hwy 2 from Grand Island to Alliance. Beautiful and very stress-reducing. Couldnt imagine trying to photograph the landscape with my limited equipment. Youd need a panoramic camera to do it justice. But I did snap a few at Carhenge and got someone to take one of me on site. I may post a few later. Sunday was also magnificent. I went from Alliance to Ogallala but took a detour to see the Scottsbluff area. Im pretty sure my favorite drive of the whole trip was west from Courthouse and Jail Rocks on Hwy 88 before turning north to Gering and Scotts Bluff Natl Monument. Wow! Ranchland and bluffs all the way. I kept wondering what it would be like to live facing those bluffs all the time. Of course, it occurred to me I probably would be less fond of the area in winter. I dont think I could have timed the trip better. Temps were reasonable and scenery was perfect. I love fall. I missed church Sunday, but I think I really did commune with God in the Church of the Bluffs. Went up to near the top of Scotts Bluff in the car. Also breathtaking, and not scary at all. Did not opt for the steep walk required to go higher up. Took some photos I havent looked at yet. Well see. Again, my camera is limited. Thought Id see something more impressive in Ogallala, but didnt really. I was very tired so had supper at the Dennys attached to my motel. Dont bother. Not even very good for a Dennys. Was supposed to get free breakfast buffet there Monday morning, but passed. Instead drove to Paxton and had a brunch of ribeye and cowboy beans at Oles. A coyote and an elk kept me company in my booth. John Heineman, I did snap a photo of the dik-dik. In Kearney, I found my motel in the midst of every motel and fast food place the town has to offer. Ate at a Whiskey Creek nearby, which was good, even though I was hoping to avoid chains. It was the only hotel that didnt offer a map or suggestions for eating places either at the desk or in the notebook in the room. I did, however, drink most of a Sam Adams. Naughty little girl. Ha! But I dont think I made the most of my visit to Kearney. May need to return. This morning I had hoped to go to MONA (Museum of Nebraska Art) before I left Kearney, but it didnt open until 11:00, and I wanted to be gone by then. I drove a little way south to Hwy 6 and spent 90 mins. or so at Harold Warps Pioneer Village, which Ive heard about for about 44 years without ever visiting before. Amazing. Just chock full of stuff, stuff, and more stuff. Could have stayed longer; hit the saturation point and moved on. Ate lunch in downtown Hastings on a street with 3 coffee shops and an independent bookstore. Im guessing I was near Hastings College, judging from the clientele. The bookstore was surprisingly good. Then headed for home, staying on Hwy 6 all the way to downtown Lincoln. One stop for Dairy Queen vanilla cone in Milford. Getting to O St. was somewhat bittersweet, but got sweeter when my mom and Fenris were so happy to see me. Tomorrow its back to work and choir. Julies Big Adventure: A+
