July 1- Four months have gone by since beginning this walk and with less than 2 to go, there are still so many more individuals who I believe can benefit from the mission of this journey. At the beginning of today, we left Bayfield on an incredibly dangerous stretch of road with little to no shoulder and headed to Durango to meet up with a few familiar faces! Randal and Allee whom we met on our way up Wolf Creek Pass had gotten in touch with me following our encounter and offered to give the 3 of us a place to stay at their home in Durango, CO. Before I talk more about them, I want to thank a few other folks as well. As we came into Durango, a woman by the name of Christine stopped off the side of the road after she noticed we had been walking the past few days. She brought us lunch and also went on to share the story of her brother with us, who also lost his life by suicide. Thank you so much for everything Christine and thank you for calling the newspaper as well! Following our encounter with Christine, we went to the local park here in Durango known as Santa Rita Park to eat lunch and wait for Randal, Allee, and her mother Barbara to bring us to their home. While resting on a picnic table, Dale, the gentleman who Christine called from the paper, came down to the park to do an interview for the Durango Herald! When Randal, Barbara, and Allie came down, they too got to be interviewed and after we loaded up all of our gear, we headed to their home. After 10 beautiful miles of driving through the outcropped mountains filled with ancient caverns, we came to their house on the top of Falls Creek Ranch north of Durango. Their unique hexagonal home at the top of a mountain is like nothing I have ever seen before. From their back porch there is an incredible panorama of the western San Juan Mountains that looks almost like a painted backdrop. While enjoying the scenery, we also had the pleasure to take part in a delicious meal of chicken, rice, grilled vegetables, coleslaw, and homemade tortillas. Thank you Mckown family for your hospitality!
