July 11, 2013 Communicate with God If you remember that old movie “Cool Hand Luke,” you’ll remember these famous lines, “What we have here is a failure to communicate.” Much of the time that is our problem with God, we have failed to communicate with Him. He has been left out of the loop of our problem, and now to us the problem seems to enormous for anyone. Oh, how we must learn how to communicate With God. When we read Ps 13:3-4 we find an obvious change from the previous two verses. In those verses the psalmist attention was fixed on the trouble that he’d experienced. He was torn up over the circumstances of his life and why the Lord had not just jumped in and bailed him out. We all find ourselves in these situations and if we are honest we expect God to get us out of them or run to our aid. Now, David has changed his focus from himself to God. As we look at these verses we see how David begins to talk to God about the situation of his life and why God needed to do something. We might ask well what was the problem that the psalmist was dealing with in his life? There have been all sorts of suggestions. The particular problem is not what matters, but instead what he did with his problem. The psalmist did what we should do with our problems. He went to God with his problem. He honestly expressed his feelings to God about the problem. We notice from the previous verses that God didn’t readily come to his rescue so he complained to God. Now, he stops his complaining and starts communicating with God. His communication with God gives 2 reasons why God should do something about what he is facing or dealing with in his life. These reasons might be seen as motivations for God to answer. In verse 3 he says, “Consider and hear me, O LORD my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death.” David appeals to God on the basis of who he is as servant and a follower of God. Then he reminds God of what could happen if God does not work in his life and situation. David is asking for God to intervene so that he’d not die. David appeals or intercedes for God to concentrate on him. He said, “Consider Me.” David is saying remember me, I’m down here Lord and You know, I am one of Your children. Because I am one of Your children, Your integrity is at stake. What will the world think if You abandon one of Your children? Even we in our world look with a sense of disdain on those who abandon their kids. What David is doing is simply talking with God about his hurts and needs. He longs for God to intervene. He knows God is His only hope and that his life has purpose and value to God. So, he is simply reminding God of what he knows to be true. Everyone of us have worth and value in the eyes of God and it is not anything wrong with us reminding God of who we are. We are one of those ones that Jesus died to redeem. If He loved us that much then surely He is concerned about the problems we face. Then it’s as if David says God, open my eyes so that I might be able to understand why You’re allowing this trial in my life. Every time we go through a crises or a problem, we need to be careful that in the midst of it that we do not miss the very purpose of God in it. It could be that the trial is caused by sin that we have gotten off into. Then it could be that God is trying to teach us a lesson in faith or it may very well be that God has a greater purpose in the trial for His kingdom work. It may be that our problem is going to be a platform for some ministry that God is going to do. The trouble with prayer is that we often do not see or ask the hard questions of what God is doing. What we have is a failure to Communicate with God. May we learn how to communicate with God.
